Saltmarsh is an earthy and elegant architectural space that blends seamlessly into the lower reaches of the Merri River. Designed and built entirely by Glenistair, during 2004, environmental considerations came first at every stage of construction, particularly the use of recycled materials, found objects, with stories to tell.
Saltmarsh features a diversity of materials that were sourced from all manner of unlikely places. These include every board, stump and rafter from an iconic Port Fairy house (dismantled specifically for the project), packing ply from shipping containers and old high bay lights that once illuminated Myers department store in Melbourne.
A walk through our building is a discovery in itself –industrial sized barn doors, copper guttering used as paneling, reclaimed Australian red pine and stories of construction that can only be shared by the builder himself.
Come for a visit – and feel free to ask – what timber is that or where did that come from?
